I don't believe this is the exact same setup, but I have an old backup
server running Debian Sarge with Bacula and a Sony AIT-2 SCSI tape drive
that works fine. Here's the dmesg output from that server:

scsi1:A:2:0: Tagged Queuing enabled.  Depth 64
  Vendor: SONY      Model: SDX-500C          Rev: 01c9
  Type:   Sequential-Access                  ANSI SCSI revision: 02

Works like a champ with bacula.
