Is that necessarily true? Seems to me it depends on what the FS thought
that file was composed of pre-fix. Sparse means that there's a big hole
in the file, if I understand it correctly. A file that appears to be
fully populated with only one repeating byte might not back up that way.
But I'm not exactly sure which one the original poster meant (or if my
understanding of sparse files is correct).

What are the DISADVANTAGES of leaving sparse files enabled for every
backup anyway?
