I've been looking through the documentation, but don't think I fully
understand what exactly is going on. We set-up our autochanger to do GFS
and will have 1 year of back-up online with our current storage (an
upgrade is in the future). We plan to take out the oldest monthly tapes
and store them on the shelf. We also plan to have about 4 months of
diffs and 8 weeks of incremental daily backups. Right now we have
retention periods of 30 days set for files and 6 months for volumes.
>From what I understand is that after 30 days, the files will be removed
from the catalog and between 1 month and 6 months, only a full restore
of the client can be achieved.

Is it possible to use bscan to reread the tape (or catalog backed up to
tape) to retrieve the file list of the job? I would like some way to
have more versions of files available maybe not necessarily in the
database, but at least an option.

The other question is if set a ridiculously large amount of time for
file retention (say 2 years), when a volume is recycled, will the files
be pruned from the database? I think that would give me what I want and
keep the database fairly constant (after 2 years have passed).

Are there any APIs that can be used to communicate directly with the
director? I know bconsole is basically a terminal program, but we want
to design a web front end for our users to log into, select which file
(and which version) they want restored for our network home directory.
They can only restore files on the home directory file server and they
will only ever restore. I'm not all that excited about using expect
(have had issues in the past with unreliable timing and such) and would
rather just deal directly with the director/database.

Thanks,

Robert LeBlanc
