I think I'm having an issue with how Bacula handles retention periods and volume recycling.
What I need to do: I have several machines that need to be backed up. Most of these machines have multiple filesystems. Most of these filesystems we only need to retain a backup for one month, but a few of them we need to retain for 2 or more months. With this in mind I've created a separate job for each filesystem. I need to be able to set different retention periods for each job. What I would like to do: I currently use two pools: "Full" and "Default". Both specify File media-type volumes in the same directory and have 'Maximum Volume Jobs' set to 1. Any level Full backup goes to the Full pool, which then gets copied to an external drive for offsite storage. All other backup levels go to the Default pool. I would like to keep just these two pools and have the volumes recycled automatically when the jobs on them expire. >From what I can tell, this won't work with Bacula. If I'm reading the documentation correctly, I can only set the job retention period for all jobs on a given client instead of on a per-job basis. Further, I can't specify that a volume will be recycled based on the jobs that it contains. If the volume retention period expires, then the jobs on it are pruned. For my purposes, that priority is backwards. I would rather have it that a volume can only be recycled after the jobs on it have expired. Similarly, a job should only expire when all the files that it contains have expired. When any object expires it could still be purged from the catalog to save space, but again only if all the objects that it contains have also expired. So, have I completely missed something here? Can I specify an individual job's retention period independently of other jobs on the same client? And will a job's retention period prevent a volume from being recycled if the volume's retention period is shorter than the job's? /dwight -- Dwight N.
