Yes, this is possible with most OSes.  Some do not support checking the 
position, but they are what I consider second class OSes (as far as tape 
drive handling goes), and Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris are not in that 
category (I'm not sure about Win32).

The problem with all these things is that it takes programming.
