Hmm. I've been thnking about this, and I must admit I can't follow your
thought. I'm quite convinced that, at least after cycling once through
all volumes, filling the volumes allows a more optimal pruning, and thus
to allow recycling volumes earlier than if you start them, leave them
"lying around", and later fill them.

I guess I'll need a picture to understand why you think that would save
space.

The only possible problem I see in the (more or less) normal setup is
that you must try to have as few volumes as possible.

Thinking about changing space requirements is definitely a good point,
but in a set up where I have a dedicated file system to work with I
limit the nmber of volumes per pool rather strictly and observe how
things develop.

Usually, after some months you can better see what space requirements
you have. Then, either change the volume limit for the affected pools -
this is only a configuration file change, a reload and possibly an
update command - or go shopping for more disks first :-)

In my experience, that is a very small percentage of the time needed to
operate and observe a backup system. And it has the advantages that a)
it can be implemented with existing Bacula :-) and b) my customers have
one more reason to make sure someone (hopefully me) actually operates
their backup installation.
