Hi Alan, Maxim did get things working. He had justed missed a "label" command out (looking back at my email the reply came to just me rather than the list).
However I don't know whether he used user bacula or not. I have so far only used root for my DVD stuff. I have configuring for user bacula on my todo list but at the moment I'm just happy that DVDs work at all.
