I'm new to the world of Bacula + Tapes so some of this is new and fresh for me.
Kill any process that might be accessing the drive - this means bacula-sd, bacula-dir, and any OTHER backup software that may be running as a service (eg Backup Exec, NT Backup, etc..) wanting to connect to the drive. That will clear up the permissions problem for you. Then attempt access to the drive. I had no luck with Bacula writing to the DAT-72 on the unit I was working on, but the DLT you have should work.
