This is one of the problem which is why I don't like automatic conversions in 
RPMs (their 
use is strongly discouraged in Fedora/RHEL - AFAIK).

Regarding your proposal: I don't think this is a good idea because 
installing/updating a 
RPM should never require user interaction. Just think of unattended, automated 
update 
solutions which would hang forever in this situation. Even worse, maybe some 
services were 
shut down during the update so essentially the system would remain in a 
non-functional 
state, requiring some manual intervention.

Debian has debconf for that but this mechanism bit me several times. IMHO one 
should not 
do any conversion but provide user scripts which may be invoked with the 
correct 
credentials etc.
