I believe you can use bscan to scan the tape and have the 'number of files' 
value in the catalog adjusted. Likewise, you should be able to use bscan to 
scan the tapes that contain backups and have the metadata imported into the 
catalog. (have a look at the manual for further details on how to use bscan)
