Assuming you mean PGP: IIRC this made use of gzip to compress the input before applying crypto, partly to somewhat increase entropy before hitting the encryption routines. It was possible to give PGP flags to not compress input and this was essential when encrypting already-compressed data in order to prevent output file bloat.
