Finaly got it.  the problems seem to be sevral fold.  One i didnt have 
an Ultra320 LVD terminator, just a normal multi-mode one. and two the 
library needs to have its LUN ID lower than the drive, previously the 
drive was LUN ID 1 and the library was 2.

Also thanks for this tip.  I was about to throw the unit out the door 
after i finaly got everything SCSI wise setup correctly and i still 
couldnt catalog the tapes, but after spending the time to do this to 
all ten tapes the 'label barcodes' command worked great :-)
