An earlier message in this group sparked a question in my mind.

What type of error detection and error correction algorithms are
implemented in Bacula?

While working for Hewlett-Packard's tape backup group (many years ago),
we were taught (brainwashed?) that tape was an inherently error prone
media and that backup without error correction of some sort was worse
than no backup at all; it gave a false sense of security. All software
products that were 'Certified' for use with HP tape products was
required to have Reed Solomon (or equivalent) error recovery capabilities.

Has the quality and reliability of tapes improved that error recovery is
no longer needed?

Thanks for the info,

Grant....
