I read the documentation for both drives in http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12128_div/12128_div.html and http://www.quantum.com/Products/TapeDrives/LTOUltrium/LTO-2HH/Index.aspx, and I believe you can go for the Quantum. Same 64 MB buffer memory size, same Ultra160 interface (the HP drive has a SAS model, too), very similar transfer rate, at a lower price than the HP drive. You should check if your prices are for external units and the terms of the warranty. Regards,

Yes: - capacity - speed - technological lifespan (newer, so will probably be around after dlt is gone) - durability (drive match data rate so drives and media have a longer lifespan We paid about US $2300 for an external hp960 a few months ago. You may need fewer lto tapes (because they hold more data), so maybe this will offset the higher cost of the drive. I load 700GB+ on my lto4 tapes, so 3 may be all you need to do a full backup. I use bacula to backup about 14 servers (win/lin/osx) nightly. I run 20 jobs, concurrently backing up each server to tape and raid. As one job finishes, another waiting job starts. Takes about 2 to 3 hours. I backed up a 3TB raid in a few hours this hardware with bacula. Maybe the time saved doing backups, and the faster restore performance (faster uptime) can be used to help justify the higher cost...
