Wops. I completely overlooked this. But I guess in order to use this 
parameter you have to let Bacula automatically create volumes in the 
pool, don't you?

Well the manual (now that a know where to look) says that at least you 
can update this setting for existing volumes with the 'update volume' 
command on the console. So I assume that Bacula will recycle the old 
huge volume, notice the new limit and create as many volumes as needed 
during the next backup run.
