Greetings,
I have a question that may be simple for some, but not so for me.

I am in the process of beta testing bacula for our environment and I'm
trying to get my brain around volume management for our requirements.

I plan on going disk to disk to tape, in a ~3 month cycle.

I back up about 300Gb of data in fulls and incrementals a month.

What I'd like to do is have 2 sets of backups (full and incrementals)
on disk. one set from the month prior, and one working set of the
current month. when its time for the 3rd month's full, I'd like to
migrate the prior month off to tape, and reuse its disk volumes.

(I have migration running as it should) ;)

I've read the volume management/pool/scheduling sections in the docs
about 12 times each, and I can see about 4 or 5 different ways to
accomplish this. ultimately, I'd like it to be all automatic with the
exception of changing tapes in the magazine.

I'd probably use full backups on the first friday of the month, and
incrementals for the rest of the month.

I see a couple of things that are throwing me. I think I can use
the "use duration" directive for the full backup jobs as they will only
take a day or so to run. but what about the Incremental pool? each
disk volume will be 3GB but they will each have a different "start"
time so I won't be able to use the "Use duration" for them. so I'm
looking for some advice on pruning/recycling disk volumes in this
situation.

I think I'll need to have at least 2 "sets" of Pools and for the
migration. I think I can use a sql query selection type to pull the
different sets of pools in turn. or would it be better to have 2
different migration jobs that took turns.
##(musing off)

any thoughts on this? I have a good idea of what I want this cake to
taste like when its fully baked, but I'm not sure what the best recipe
will be.

I'm not looking for someone to write the conf files for me, but I'm
looking for someone to point me a the right direction.

Thoughs? ideas?

Many Thanks
Fred
