I must take that back :-) , I was just lucky , since I use disk spool, and
bacula was using mysql only while dbcheck was doing delete of records.

When I was doing the same at home my backup started BackupCatalog (was trying) 
while dbcheck was waiting for a query, and in that case the tables where locked,
so there was a very long wait before the backup started, and the tray-monitor
was hanging, waiting for the director.

If the index help as much as the wiki say, you can run it while bacula is idle
anyway.
