Thanx for your help,
I solved the problem substituting the Ethernet card with a new Gigabit one, then plugged the server into the Gigabit switch.
Now everything works great!

My best guess, from personal experience, is that faulty autonegotiation
is to blame. The combination I see arise from this most often is a
machine that is running full duplex and a switch that has autonegotiated
to half. For servers and static ports, I don't mess around with this
stuff and I hard code them both to remove all doubt.
