Which OS are you running ? Presumably solaris ?  If you are running
solaris 10 then you could use Dtrace to help you identify what is the
reason for the lack of speed. If you're running < solaris 10 then you
could use truss or similar.

How many CPU's in the box and what disk layout do you have etc ?

I've noticed that compared to x86 boxes, the older sun boxes are really
slow in general, especially with CPU bound tasks.
