I would suggest by first upgrading to a recent stable version because that will make it more likely that any bugs you find can be fixed. Then, enable debug output for the DIR so that it logs all its scheduling-related actions. I don't know which debug level is optimal for this, but would start with 100 which gives reasonable detailed information about what the DIR does IMO. Restart the DIR to have a known program state you start with. I would use a small script which uses bconsole to issue a 'sta dir' every few minutes and logs the output. The resulting information, status output and log file together, might tell you what happens around the time the jobs disappear. If you find that it needs actually months of running the DIR without restarting for the problem to occur, I'd sugest simply using cron to force a DIR restart once a month, for example.
