No.  They're not followed.

If you check the archives, you'll see I started a conversation about this
where I suggested a new config value, SymlinkDepth, that would determine
how far to follow symlinks (i.e. a value of 0 would not follow, 10 would
follow to a maximum depth of 10)

Unfortunately, I haven't had time to hack on this to generate a patch.
