There's no requirement to do so, it all depends on the performance of
that machine and where you put the director's database. If your system
can handle the database load AND the tape writting/disk writting
required to do the backup, nothing stops you from putting both on the
same machine. If however you notice that data throughput suffers due to
the database, you may thing about separating Dir from SD, or just
putting the database on a separate system.
