Bacula keeps information about the tape in the database, in particular the number of tape files already written to it. Did you get a message like this? "The number of files mismatch! Volume=xx Catalog=yy" If so, then Bacula is trying to avoid losing your data on the tape, because if it were to use the incorrect file count from the database when appending it would wipe out any backups that follow.
