It would actually be nice if GZIP could be turned on just for the 
network portion, ie. compress the data over the network but 
decrompress it before sending it to the backup device.  I have it 
turned on primarily to reduce the amount of data I have to shift 
over the network.

If you're using VSS it will also stall your system while it builds 
the shadow shares; at least it seems to stall mine (probably because 
one of the things it backs up is on the same drive as the OS).
