Unfortunately, you didn't describe the problem in a way I can understand.

First you wrote that jobs wait too long, waiting for a cancelled job or 
one not able to run because a host is down, now it's the DIR dying.

I suggest you start with a simpler setup. Use only one machine for DIR, 
SD and FD, use only one job, one pool, no schedules. As simple as possible.

Find out if the programs run stable. Crashes are definitely not 
something I expect from Bacula, so I'd suggest you fix that problem 
first. Exiting from bconsole should not, for example, crash the DIR. (By 
the way, better use the quit command to leave bconsole - c-d in my 
experience leaves a bconsole process running.

If the crashing DIR is your main problem, you might run it with debug 
output enabled and you should definitely capture a backtrace for a bug 
report.

Later, set up your network jobs and your schedules.
