(Try pressing the eject button 8 times or for 8 seconds)

If the power is unreliable, UPSes are cheap insurance.

We are not using bacula in fact, just testing, so we didn't know how often this will happen.

The answer to that is always "at the most inconvenient possible moment"

Power in the UK countryside is quite unreliable and we would never complete backups without use of large UPS units keeping all the servers running.
