A patch was proposed, which Kern will probably apply initially with a compile 
option #define to enable when building.

It is not immediately obvious how one can change the implementation without 
making existing backups unreadable, unless there is some version tag that can 
be altered to match, with code to select an implementation difference on 
restore.

I did the work to make cross-compilation of the Win32 client possible on a 
Linux machine, but I have not yet delved into the platform independent code 
details - they cross-compiled without problems so only the compiler got to 
see the code so far!
