I have just successfully rebuilt an XP Pro PC (eg baremetal restore) using bacula, in order to resize the main partition.
The backup procedure was just a standard bacula backup using the 1.38.9 win32 fd from sourceforge and with VSS enabled. The rest of bacula is running on a Debian 'Etch' server with Jose's 1.38.8 debian packages from a few days ago. The restore was done using BartPE, with the following additional steps: . Had to put the bacula plugin together myself (doesn't seem to be provided anymore on the sourceforge downloads) to be available for bartpe. . Before using 'diskpart' to rebuild the partition table, you need to 'net start daserver'. I think this might be an undocumented feature (eg bug) in the current bartpe release. . I found the wx-console is next to useless under BartPE. It was slow and would hang for no apparent reason. I can't compare this behaviour to a normal windows environment as I've never used wx-console before. bconsole worked perfectly though, with the exception that my restore dumped more messages to the screen than it could handle in good time under BartPE. This was almost certainly a configuration option that I could have changed though. . The restore failed immediately on starting until I manually created '\bacula\working' on my newly formatted C: drive. I think it wanted to put the bsr file there and barfed when it couldn't. . I couldn't find a way to run fixmbr or fixboot from BartPE, I needed to use an XP boot disk and boot into recovery mode to do this. As it turned out though in my case, I probably didn't need to do this at all as the MBR and boot sector didn't get overwritten when I recreated the partition table. It wasn't booting because my boot.ini was still trying to boot off of the old installation at partition 2 instead of the new single partition 1 where I was restoring too. Because of the last step, I can't really say it was a true 'baremetal' restore because the disk wasn't properly blank to start with, and I haven't confirmed that the bootsector was actually installed by me, it may have already been there. But.... woohoo :) James ------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security?
