Probably the best solution would be to ignore this question entirely --
it seems to be well documented, and now it's in the list archives every
other day. ;)
My question would have to be "why is this a problem /now/, when prior to
1.38.8 or so, people seemed to manage to compile this on their own?" Is
it just that many people took this long to upgrade (though I've got to
assume the installation procedure is similar in 1.36 -- unless there
were more binaries back then)?
