Hi, I've spent the last couple of days setting bacula up with a StorageTek L20. It's equipped with two Ultrium-1 drives and 19 100GB uncompressed tapes (the last slot is a cleaning tape). The good news is that this all works very nicely... I'm seriously impressed how well it all came together.
My problem now is what sort of backup policy I should adopt. The server currently has a 200GB /home, but this will soon be expanded to 600GB. I don't foresee that there will be much need to backup more than 300GB for a year or two, though. In addition I'd want to backup MySQL databases, system config files, etc. but these are relatively small. I've literally spent hours pondering over Pools and Schedules suitable but come up with nothing I like so I'm asking for some help and guidelines (a suitable set of resources would be great!) Ideally I would want something like: full backup from two months ago full backup from one month ago differentials each week since last month full backup from beginning of week differentials each day since beginning of week full backup from one day ago incremental backups since day old backup This sounds really complicated and I have no experience with this sort of thing. Trying to implement something like that becomes confusing very quickly with different Pools (number of volumes in each pool, volume use duration, volume retention, etc.) and so on. Am I missing the point? Can somebody help me out with some good ideas to keep at least a fairly old backup and more recent backups that will give me more than one way of getting to a fairly "recent" state, should my system fail?
