Note that the References: header is a NNTP/Usenet device (RFC1036bis) which was shoehorned into mail service.

in its header. That is used by the client to build the threaded
view.

It's nice that some clients have this ability, but to my knowledge it's not defined in any mail standards - it's something ported from newsreaders.
