If you search the archives I think you'll find a couple of postings related to 
the subject dated late 2004 possibly early 2005.

I set it up and used it for a short while but I never had to rely on the 
backups before the situation changed. I wrote a small script (based on input I 
got from this list) to lock and unlock the vobs during and after backup. I'll 
send it if there's any interest.

Bacula is an excellent tool and I see no reason why it would not work.
