Just to add my experiences and ideas,
we have also for 10 years been backing up Dominos nfs databases without any
special agent or setup and without shutting it down.
We have never had any problem restoring either - but it is not so often you
need to restore - so it is no proof
Domino server does some housecleaning at specific intervals during the
night, so I try to avoid those times for backup.
If you want to be more on the safe side and don't want to shut down, you
could setup another server or workstation, where you replicate the
databases to, scheduled by the Domino or Notes scheduler, and you backup
between the scheduled replications. If that is a server you can also change
the housekeeping times to fit your backup needs. If it is a workstation
nothing much would happen except the scheduled replications.
cheers

The great thing about a server or workstation running a replica of your
nsf files is that it can be switched off during the backup like I
described in my other mail. I'm sure this is the cleanest way to go
about it.
