We no longer support Gnome 1.4 -- it is too old.  If you want it, pull version 
1.36.3 from Source Forge. I believe support for it was still available.  
Concerning CORBA and ORBit, I know little about the details of Gnome other 
than the APIs that I use. However, I can say that Gnome is most likely 
written by a bunch of ex-Windows programmers because it is a rat's-nest of a 
huge number of interacting components all with unpronounceable names.
