I'm having exactly this problem that a gentoo server does crash at
night when doing a full backup, and it requires a cold start
afterwards.
A sample of the errors:
EXT3-fs error: (device sda3): ext3_find_entry: reading directory
#0241205 offset 0
This happens some thousand times on the console and after that,
nothing works anymore, including a simple ls or reboot command.
I'm not sure but currently i think that this error only occurs since
updating the server from 1.36 to 1.38 and if i remember correctly,
there have been massive changes in I/O handling...
This looks more like an underlying hardware error, probably a broken
disk. It is possible that it's only triggered during a backup, when the
disk is more heavily used than in normal operations, or when files or
directories are accesses that normally aren't used. You might want to
run extensive fscks or use the badblocks program or use the
smartmontools or even simply try another disk...
So - can someone provide an ebuild for 1.38.x please ? :)
... but of course it *could* also be a Bacula-related problem.
