AAAARGHHH!!!!

phew... that was loud :-)

Ok, before you do anything important - read the manual sections concerning mtimeonly et al... that might explain things better than I did. Then, verify the problem, which should be easy when you create a small test job. And finally, ...

The possible future solution: Bacula could find files not only based on time stamps, but also by comparing with the list of previously saved files. This would, obviously, require massive code changes in the DIR and the FD.

I have to admit that I assumed bacula would already do this. [This
would also allow to detect deleted files and remove these when
restoring a backup, which IMHO is a basic feature, too.]

Basing increment backup strategy on timestamps alone is bad enough in
stupid archival tools, but doing it when you already have a database
in place with all relevant data is IMHO a very, very serious error.

... start fixing it :-)

Well, as far as I know it's something that can be fixed. Not easily, though, because some major modification of the FD and DIR would be necessary, and of course the load on the database would increase.

This has been discussed, and what you suggest is more or less the outline of what might be the solution, but up till now, nobody coded this or managed to push Kern to implement it or motivated anyone else to try implementing it.

For me it's close to being a killing point :-(

Well, then, I suppose, you either have to start developing (of course, I'd gladly help testing etc...) or look around for a backup solution that better fits your needs. (Which, I guess, might be hard to find in the open source field.)
