I've achieved this for the moment by agreeing with the users that files and directories below any directory named "tmp" "nobackup" or "scratch" won't be backed up.
The idea is to place a file (e.g. .nobackup) into the directory which is to be excluded.
Isn't this on the todo list somwehere? AB
