Ah! Never even occurred to me.
Is there ANY way to get the tape head speed, other than attempting to do
it mathematically?

This can't be network speed, as it is spooled. The only thing I'm
thinking is that the disk could be THAT slow? Doesn't seem likely.
The disk and tape are not likely to be on the same controller. Any tips?
