Hello,
please send replies to the mailing list. Usually I would reply much
later or not at all to mails like yours, sent to me personally...

Hi,
I hope i don't sound stupid, but can you elaborate? I'm not
understanding your first step,
Sure.
First, the problem to solve is that Bacula needs to know which files to
restore. The catalog contains that data.
Now, your problem description sounds like you know the names of the
files you need to restore.
Using the 'query' command, you can investigate if files of that names
are known to Baculas catalog, and during which jobs they were stored.
Currently, I don't have a Bacula server running, so no screenshots :-(
Back to your problem - use the query command to verify if the files you
need are known to Baculas catalog.
If they are, find, proceed with step 2.
If they are not, you need to either insert the file stored files
metadata (like file name, file dates, job information for the backups,
etc.) into the catalog, or you can extrect the files directly.
In either case, you need the storage volumes where the files are stored
in. That's either the disk files or the tapes used for the backups with
the files you want.
After you identified the volumes (or the possible candidates...) you can
use the program bls to verify the files you look for are actually stored
on the volume you examine.
After you found the volume(s) you need, you can use bextract to directly
extract the files you want, or you use bscan to scan the volume
information into the catalog, so you can restore them through the
regular console user interface.
The mentioned tools - bls, bextract and bscan - are all part of the core
Bacula distribution and should be somewhere on your system. The complete
documentation is easiest found in the Bacula manual, for example at
http://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/Volume_Utility_Tools.html
As it's quite a while ago that I actually used any of these tools, I
can't offer you the right command lines. Some advice, though:
- don't forget to use the -d or -v switch if you don't understand the
output. It gives more details, which might overwhelm you, but which
could also provide valuable clues.
- bls works great with disk based volumes because the volume name you
need is just the file name. Easier to find than a tapes volume name...
- I found that the tools needed to be pointed to my configuration files
to work correctly for me, but that might have been because I use tape
drives.
- Most important: Don't lose your patience - in case of problems during
recovery I found that I could always get the data I wanted, but
sometimes you need to concentrate... which is not easy after hours of
unsuccesfull disaster recovery ;-)
the second i think i can get to when i
solve step1. I'm glad i haven't lost these files though.
Good. Always good to have a reliable backup system, right?
Good luck!
Arno
Thanks.
Dave.

Hi,

Hello,
I've got two freebsd boxes, one the backup server has the files on
another hard disk on it. The other the client i want to restore some
files that were not previously backed up on it. The files came from
and are backed up on the server. Now i'd like to get them with a
client that didn't have them originally and restore them. My problem
is complicated by the fact that i believe the mysql database that
originally handled these files is gone. My question is can i restore
these files?
Most probably, yes.
It's a two-step process at this stage:
First, you need the files in the catalog, otherwise you can't select
them for restore.
Verify the files are in the catalog or not by using the supplied
queries. If they are not in the catalog, you can use bls to search
through your available volumes, and bscan to load the metadata from a
volume into the catalog.
Second, the restore process itself.
That's rather simple: Start a restore process using the command line.
Select jobs the usual way, select the files to restore, and after
you've done that, in the following menu, you can choose the client.
This might seem identical to the client selection at the beginning of
the resore process, but this time, you select the client where the
data shall be restored to - just what you need, I think.
Hope this helps,
Arno
Thanks.
Dave.
