Thanks for the pointer....

As a fairly experienced administrator with legato networker and EMC's
EDM, I find it strange that I have to associate both a pool resource and a storage resource to a job definition with bacula, surely a pool is
enough ?

If you say so... but that would be something totally new to me, concerning Bacula.

What are the benefits of having it the way it is currently ?

I see two important benefits:
Number one, I can use Bacula now and don't have to wait for something else :-) The other one is that I can have a pool spread over different media types. Which is, at least for me, something I prefer.

From a non coder/developers point of view I dont think it can be too
complicated to write the something like;

I need to write something to tape (covers backups starting and tape filling)
which pool is it
do I have a volume in a drive for that pool
is the volume appendable

and so on

well, I'm also a non coder, but I do know a little about the internal workings of Bacula, and I don't think it's that easy. The difficultpart is the stuff happening behind the visible layer. And, of course, Kern said, not too long ago, that implementing a fully automatic device selction would require lots of work.

Obviously, if you want or even need such a feature, feel free to suggest it next time the future projects are voted on. Or feel free to start working and submit a patch :-)

Arno

Cheers,

Brian.
