Hello,

Arno,

Thanks again. Excellent explanation, especially getting through my thick skull! (lol)

I see you're working in a medical institution - have you started your career in radiology and still carry around the lead protection?

;-P

Although I am making progress, I am still having some issues. Last night, my incremental worked except those that were blocked by the catalog backup that did not work. After I cancelled the catalog backup, which by definition is a full backup, the rest of the incrementals completed. The catalog backup produced this error message:

04-Jan 03:11 rosalind-dir: Start Backup JobId 3178, Job=BackupCatalog. 2006-01-04_01.10.00 04-Jan 03:12 rosalind-sd: Please mount Volume "Chromosome0021" on Storage Device "GeneSplicer" for Job BackupCatalog.2006-01-04_01.10.00 04-Jan 04:12 rosalind-sd: Please mount Volume "Chromosome0021" on Storage Device "GeneSplicer" for Job BackupCatalog.2006-01-04_01.10.00 04-Jan 06:12 rosalind-sd: Please mount Volume "Chromosome0021" on Storage Device "GeneSplicer" for Job BackupCatalog.2006-01-04_01.10.00 04-Jan 10:12 rosalind-sd: Please mount Volume "Chromosome0021" on Storage Device "GeneSplicer" for Job BackupCatalog.2006-01-04_01.10.00

Hmm. Well, first, this is not exactly an error message, only a request to the operator. Anyway, as long as that tape was available in the autochanger, I would have expected it got mounted...

GeneSplicer is my tape changer and Chromosome0021 is an existing tape in append mode. Here is a partial output of list volumes showing this:

| 102 | Chromosome0016 | Full | 258,084,262,555 | 268 | 31,536,000 | 1 | 3 | 1 | SDX700-C | 2005-12-12 17:37:57 | | 107 | Chromosome0021 | Append | 2,328,594,402 | 3 | 31,536,000 | 1 | 8 | 1 | SDX700-C | 2005-12-28 18:18:46 | | 126 | Chromosome0015 | Purged | 0 | 0 | 31,536,000 | 1 | 2 | 1 | SDX700-C | 0000-00-00 00:00:00 | +---------+----------------+-----------+-----------------+---------- +--------------+---------+------+-----------+----------- +---------------------+

Apparently, the system could/would not mount Chromosome0021. I am able to move these tapes around from the command line, so it appears as if I have introduced something into bacula. This was working before I went through the 1.38 upgrade and then 1.36 retrograde.

It might be that you forgot an imprtant step during the upgrade: Not only has the catalog to be upgraded, the SD configuration for autochangers has to be modified, too. If you don't do that, your autochanger won't work.

You might find the next bit of information amusing or confusing (I love little rhymes). This morning, after the incrementals had finished, I did a sta dir and here is the output:

Notice how the "unknowns" have disappeared. This is what had me confused before. This is what I was used to seeing. Not sure why this happened but I'm happy seeing my old responses.

Might simply be because the DIR now, after all the jobs ran, has already pruned a volume from the pool it thinks it needs.

By the way - the jobs that ran that day probably all went to the same tape, right? If they did, and no autochanger operations were necessary, I suspect you simply have to modify your SD configuration. For one drive, one autochanger, this takes about 5 minutes including the necessary backup of the file, careful thought, and assuming you've got the relevant manual page open... and don't forget to restart the SD afterwards!

Arno

    Thanks again

Arno,
    If that is expected behavior,

Expected behaviour... well, it's what I got used to. Usually, I'd expect a new volume to start with status unused or purged, but append is kind of... funny.
