I found that unmounting and remounting the tape made it work.

I'm still assuming my config is a little borked--I'm still trying to adapt
to 1.38 from 1.36, as well as switching to LTO2 from DDS4, so it could
well be pilot error for me, but at least I found a workaround, and that
workaround was effective 3 times last night (my home media server is way
too big...3 LTO2 tapes!).
