I dont think thats the problem, I even increased the sleep time to 120 sek, just to rule it out.

One suggestion: Have a look into your changer script - the typical linux one, mtx-changer, has a function to wait for a drive to become ready. You might have to do some minor modifications in the changer script you use, but I can't tell you much as I#m using linux, not a BSD system. Depending on the drive (and tapes) you use, it might take much longer than 10 seconds for your drive to finish loading a tape. DLT, for example, can take many minutes to become ready.
