Thanks for your comments... good to know one doesn't have to be a stoned expert mysql guru. My installation is a packaged one of sorts. Its a gentoo install, and it now appear nearly all my problems revolve around authentication. I gave mysql an initial password on install when prompted and got confused thinking it wanted a specific users password. It turns out if I pass that initial password mysql doesn't really care who the user is. Also some commands don't know anything about `-p' and error out if you use it. Another confusing item.
