Dear Kern,
Dear Group
I am using bacula 1.36.2-2 on Debian Sarge with HP StorageWorks DAT72
internal tape drive. Everything is working fine, except when one backup
job spans over two tapes. In this situation Bacula destroys second
cartridge. The cartridge is not usable any more even with tar. When I
insert destroyed cartridge in the cartridge door the tape LED is
flashing and after a while it switches off. When I insert good cartridge
the tape LED is flashing and after a while it stays on.
I also tested my tape drive with btape with multiple tape option (It
works fine with simple single tape option.) and bacula again destroyed
cartridges (in this example both). I am attaching log file of this test
(btape-err.txt).
Can anybody help me? I was reading manual and searching the mailing
lists without success.
I doubt very much that Bacula can destroy a tape. It uses only normal system
calls.
However, from the ouput listing you included, it *appears* that you are using
"Offline on Unmount = yes". This directive is most likely causing your tape
drive to "lock up" after the tape is ejected. It requres either a power off
or a "load" to get it going again. The exact behavior depends a lot on the
drive. If you remove this directive from your Device resource, you will
probably have more luck.
Thank you for your fast answer. I tried new btape test without "Offline
on Unmount = yes" in bacula-sd.conf and I destroyed another two DAT72
cartridges.
After the test I can't execute "tar cvf /dev/st0 /etc" command. (Before
the test I can.) It looks like the tape drive does not recognize
cartridge anymore (the tape LED is not on when the cartridge is inserted
- like when no cartridge is in the tape drive). After that I insert new
cartridge and the drive recognized it and I can execute "tar cvf
/dev/st0 /etc" command. It does not help to power off the machine and to
unplug the power cord. After reboot the tape drive still does not
recognize destroyed cartridges.
I already destroyed 6 cartridges. Can I send you destroyed cartridge by
mail to prove you that the cartridges are really damaged?
Can anybody report successful btape with multiple tape option test or
successfully executed job which spans over two DAT72 cartridges?
Would it help to use the newest Bacula 1.38?
Best regards,
