Has anyone tried a restore using 1.38 daemons with volumes created with 1.36?

Yes. That works, as far as I can tell. I only tried a small set of possible media types, and only a limited number of files. But, to the best of my knowledge, the volume format has not been changed, only the catalog database schema.
