I think you are probably getting two separate things confused.  Your SD daemon 
must have the correct permissions to open the drive.  Mine test SD runs as 
"kern" here with no problems.  However, when the SD attempts to set the drive 
parameters, the kernel will prohibit it and log a message. However, Bacula 
will simply continue and as long as your drive is in the correct mode, which 
is 99.9999% the case, there will be no problems other than a log message 
about MTSETDRVBUFFER ...
