When my DLT 7k was alive, I was only running Linux 2.6 kernels and I never had a problem using the system. Now that my drive hangs the bus on EOT, I've been driveless and without backups. Ouch! So take my works with a grain of salt... but I think Linux kernel 2.6 is fine for SCSI tapes.
