I'd disable gzip anyway, let the drive with it's dedicated compression
do the work.  Also, make sure that on your Sun boxes you have the
Gigabit ethernet cards (if not using the onboard ones) in the 66mhz
PCI slots, and not the 33mhz ones.  You'll see a big performance
increase there.

Turn it off, let the drive do the work.

Sounds like a cable problem to me.  Or that the system where it runs
quickly enough is an older/slower controller which is negotiating
properly to the drive.  

See if you can go into the BIOS of the controller with the tape drive
and turn down the speed.  You don't care about SCSI 320 speed, try to
160 or even 80mbytes/sec setting if you can.

Also, make sure the firmware on your drive is upto date.  

And of course, make sure you're not mixing differential with regular
or LVD with HVD on the controller and tape drive.  It will make a huge
difference.

Can you check the output of 'lusinfo -v' on both systems with the same
tape drive?
