Ribi> I also disableb gzip compression at the same time. I'd disable gzip anyway, let the drive with it's dedicated compression do the work. Also, make sure that on your Sun boxes you have the Gigabit ethernet cards (if not using the onboard ones) in the 66mhz PCI slots, and not the 33mhz ones. You'll see a big performance increase there.
Ribi> If I enable gzip I have the same low speed (with or w/o Ribi> --enable-smartalloc). Turn it off, let the drive do the work. Ribi> At the moment bacula runs fast enougth. The only problem to Ribi> solve is OS/Hardware related. My Tape runs at an other machine Ribi> with 17-20Mb/s and at the new Solaris 10 server with a Ribi> SCSI-U320-Controller I get only 2.6Mb/s... Sounds like a cable problem to me. Or that the system where it runs quickly enough is an older/slower controller which is negotiating properly to the drive. See if you can go into the BIOS of the controller with the tape drive and turn down the speed. You don't care about SCSI 320 speed, try to 160 or even 80mbytes/sec setting if you can. Also, make sure the firmware on your drive is upto date. And of course, make sure you're not mixing differential with regular or LVD with HVD on the controller and tape drive. It will make a huge difference. Can you check the output of 'lusinfo -v' on both systems with the same tape drive? Good luck!
