I was having the same issue as well, where jobs are purged at the time the 
backup starts but the volumes not recycled. So instead of a retention of 6d, 
I specified 5d.

Maybe some of us are mis-interpreting all these recycling and purging, and I 
keep on re-reading the manual ... but at least I am not the only who sorts of 
get confused and so end up setting a much lower volume retention period.

Anyway, I'll also have a look at "Volume Poll Interval" as Kern said.
